The Salem Dasmesh Darbar Gurdwara is a proud Sikh temple in Salem, Oregon.
Bahadur Singh first moved to Salem, OR in 1999. When he was first adjusting to small-city life, there was only a handful of other Sikh families in the area.
He noticed how people were wary of his appearance. Especially after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. he faced hardships and hatred based out of prejudice.
Despite this, Bahadur has made a home for himself in Salem.
Many friends and family joined Bahadur in Oregon. In October 2005, he and others bought a former Lutheran church on Oakhill Avenue. This location soon transformed into Salem’s first Sikh temple, Dasmesh Darbar Sikh Temple. Before, Sikhs in the area had to travel to Vancouver, Washington. Now, Salem claimed the biggest temple in Oregon.
The real growth of the Salem Sikh community spurred after the establishment of the temple. Forty of the estimated 200 Sikh families in Oregon make their home in Salem. B
